Sky Sports analyst Paul Merson has voiced his astonishment at Arsenal's £52 million signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea, suggesting the move could signal concerns about Bukayo Saka's future at the club.

In his recent column, Merson described the transfer as "shocking," questioning the logic behind the hefty investment in a player who has struggled with consistency. "I am flabbergasted by Arsenal signing Noni Madueke. If Arsenal were to buy any player from Chelsea, he'd have been the last one I thought they'd sign," Merson stated.

Madueke, known for his ability to play on the right wing, often cuts inside to take shots—a role already mastered by Saka, Arsenal's undisputed starter in that position. Merson expressed confusion over the decision, noting, "Madueke's best position is on the right, but Bukayo Saka isn't leaving the starting XI. £52m is a lot of money for a backup player."

The pundit also raised concerns about the potential impact on Arsenal's young talents, such as Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman, who are emerging through the ranks. "Unless they don't fancy Nwaneri as a player, I don't see the need for this signing," he added.

Merson speculated whether the move could be a precursor to Saka's departure. "Call me a cynic, but is there another reason for this deal? Are there concerns about Saka's future? Are they preparing for a potential sale?" he questioned. Saka has been a pivotal figure for Arsenal, and his absence has often left the team struggling.

Instead of Madueke, Merson suggested that Arsenal should have pursued Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze, whom he described as the "perfect fit" for the Gunners. "Eze has the X-factor and the ability to break down low-block defenses, which is exactly what Arsenal need," he said.

Despite his reservations about Madueke, Merson acknowledged that Arsenal have made some strong additions this summer, including Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres. However, he cautioned that Gyokeres, who excelled in Portugal, will need to prove himself in the Premier League.

As Arsenal fans await further developments, the signing of Madueke has sparked debate over the club's long-term strategy and whether it could pave the way for a major exit in the near future.
