Benfica have announced the appointment of former Fulham boss Marco Silva as their new head coach, succeeding José Mourinho, who is returning to Real Madrid. The 48‑year‑old Portuguese concluded his five‑year tenure at Craven Cottage after his contract expired, making him available for the Lisbon side.
In a statement, Benfica confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Silva, who will sign a deal lasting until the end of the 2027‑28 season, with an option to extend through 2028‑29. This marks Silva’s fourth managerial role in England, following periods at Hull City, Watford and Everton.

Simultaneously, the club confirmed Mourinho’s exit, noting that Real Madrid will pay a compensation fee of £13 million (approximately €15 million) to secure the 63‑year‑old’s services. The statement added that Mourinho had consented to the arrangement, bringing his second spell at Benfica to a close.
During his brief stint that began in September, Mourinho guided Benfica to a third‑place finish in the Primeira Liga, remaining unbeaten throughout the league campaign. His previous spell at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013 yielded a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup.
Silva’s arrival is expected to inject fresh ideas into Benfica’s squad as they aim to challenge for domestic honours and European competition in the coming seasons.
