Mourners Flock to Hefin David's Funeral in Caerphilly

Hundreds of mourners converged on St Cattwg's Church in Gelligaer, Caerphilly county, to pay their respects to the late Hefin David, a prominent Labour Member of the Senedd (MS). The funeral, held on Monday, saw an outpouring of support from across the political spectrum.

Hefin David, who passed away unexpectedly in August at the age of 47, was remembered for his unwavering dedication to his constituency and his family. He had represented Caerphilly in the Senedd since 2016.

The service was attended by senior political figures, including First Minister Eluned Morgan, Welsh Conservative Senedd leader Darren Millar, and former first ministers Mark Drakeford and Vaughan Gething. Plaid Cymru's Delyth Jewell was also present, highlighting the bipartisan respect David commanded.

Mr. David's coffin, draped in a Welsh flag and adorned with red roses, was escorted into the church by local air cadets, who stood in a guard of honour. The small church was filled to capacity, with additional mourners listening to the service via loudspeakers outside.

The service, led by Father Gary Powell, included hymns and eulogies that celebrated David's life and work. Dr. Huw Brunt, a childhood friend of David, delivered a heartfelt eulogy, describing David as a tireless advocate for additional learning needs and a fervent supporter of his community.

"Hefin lived for and was devoted to his family and to his community," Father Powell said. "He was a pillar of our community. His roots ran deep and strong in this part of the world."

David is survived by his partner, Cynon Valley MS Vikki Howells, his two daughters, and his parents, Wynne and Christine. The service concluded with the song "I bob un sydd Ffyddlon" before his committal at Thornhill Crematorium.

An inquest into David's death was opened late last month, revealing that he was found deceased at his home on August 12. A full inquest is scheduled for next April.
