Manchester United’s summer transfer window is proving to be more complex than anticipated, with several high-profile players still on the roster despite being deemed surplus to requirements. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrrell Malacia are training separately from the main squad, raising questions about their futures and the club’s ability to reshape its team.
Head coach Ruben Amorim expressed confidence in his vision for the squad earlier this summer, but the lack of significant progress in offloading these players has hindered his plans. The so-called “bomb squad,” collectively earning an estimated £1 million per week, has been excluded from first-team activities, signaling a clear intent to move them on. However, with no concrete offers materializing, United finds itself in a precarious negotiating position.
Rashford, linked with a move to Barcelona, and Sancho, reportedly eyed by Juventus, remain among the Premier League’s highest earners. Their hefty wages pose a significant obstacle to potential transfers, as neither player has shown willingness to accept a pay cut. Similarly, Antony and Malacia, while not commanding the same salaries, have yet to attract serious interest from other clubs.
Garnacho’s situation is equally uncertain. Despite being valued at around £60 million, no club has met United’s asking price, with Chelsea, Napoli, and Atletico Madrid among those mentioned in rumors. As the transfer window progresses, the likelihood of deals being finalized closer to the September 1 deadline increases, leaving United in a race against time.
To fund further signings, United may need to explore alternative options. The club has already benefited from sell-on clauses, including £6 million from Anthony Elanga’s move to Newcastle and an expected £7.6 million from Alvaro Carreras’ transfer to Real Madrid. However, these funds may not suffice for the ambitious overhaul Amorim desires.
With the clock ticking, Manchester United faces tough decisions. Whether the club can successfully offload its unwanted stars or will be forced to consider selling other assets remains to be seen. For now, the future of Rashford, Garnacho, Antony, and their teammates hangs in the balance as the transfer saga continues.
