Michael Carrick, the interim head coach of Manchester United, has cautioned the club against making a rushed decision in appointing a permanent successor, despite his stellar start to the role.
Carrick, who took the reins in January following the tumultuous departure of Ruben Amorim, has guided the Red Devils to three consecutive Premier League victories against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Fulham. However, the 44-year-old insists that the club should not base its long-term decision on his short-term success.
"Nothing has changed," Carrick stated, when discussing his situation. "The results over a short period don't change that. It can't be so knee-jerk."
The former United midfielder and captain was appointed on an interim basis until the end of the season, allowing the club's director of football, Jason Wilcox, to conduct a thorough recruitment process. Carrick, who was also in contention for the permanent role, acknowledged that he is enjoying his time at the club but understands the need for a steady approach.
"The responsibility is to keep improving the team and making Manchester United stronger," he said. "But it's about steady progress. Football can twist and turn just as quickly, so we have to keep it level and focus on what we need to do."
United's next challenge is a home fixture against Carrick's former club, Tottenham, followed by a midweek away game against West Ham, another of his previous teams. The club's hierarchy, including Wilcox, will be closely monitoring Carrick's progress, but the head coach is focused solely on the upcoming matches.
Industry experts, such as Sky Sports' Paul Merson, suggest that Carrick's true managerial mettle will be tested by how he handles a potential losing streak. "He probably needs to lose three or four on the trot, then win five on the trot," Merson said. "That's the only way you're ever going to know how good he is."
Carrick's nomination for the Premier League Manager of the Month award for January is a testament to his impressive start, but the club is expected to maintain a patient and considered approach in appointing its next permanent head coach.
