Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United must "shake hands and move on" with Ruben Amorim, describing the Portuguese manager’s time at the club as an "absolute disaster". Speaking after United’s 3-1 loss to Brentford, which left them 14th in the Premier League with just 34 points from 33 games under Amorim, Carragher argued that the situation is beyond salvageable.
"This has to end as quickly as possible," Carragher insisted. "It’s a disaster for both Ruben Amorim and Manchester United." While praising Amorim’s earlier success at Sporting Lisbon, Carragher believes the manager’s rigid tactical system has failed to align with United’s traditions and should never have been implemented.
"The quicker they make the decision, the better for everyone," Carragher added, suggesting that Amorim’s persistence with his preferred 3-5-2 formation has been detrimental. "It’s like asking Jurgen Klopp not to press or Pep Guardiola not to play through the middle—this is who he is." However, Carragher stresses that United’s squad, despite Amorim’s struggles, is capable of European qualification under a different manager.
"A competent manager could take this group into Europe," Carragher claimed. "United haven’t gone all-in on his system—they’ve spent £200m on attackers like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, who could easily fit into a back four with Bruno Fernandes as a No. 10." He noted that the club’s hierarchy, including CEO Omar Berrada and co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, must take responsibility for the failed appointment.
With growing pressure on Amorim, Carragher urged all parties to "shake hands and move on," admitting that the situation is inevitable despite the young manager’s earlier promise.
"It couldn’t have gone any worse," Carragher concluded. "While I feel for Amorim, the results are beyond belief for a club of United’s stature. It’s better for everyone to end this now."
