Gary Anderson cemented his status as one of darts' all-time greats by powering into the World Darts Championship semi-finals for the eighth time in his career. The two-time champion dispatched breakout star Justin Hood 5-2 in an electrifying New Year's Day showdown at London's Alexandra Palace.

Anderson Outclasses Rising Star

The 55-year-old Scotsman showcased his trademark precision, averaging 99.4 points per round while landing five maximums and three spectacular ton-plus finishes - including a show-stopping 161 checkout on the bullseye. Despite Hood's valiant efforts, highlighted by three 180s and a clutch 120 checkout to level at 2-2, Anderson's experience proved decisive as he won nine of the final twelve legs.

"I felt in control at times but kept letting him back in," admitted Anderson. "Finding my rhythm late on was crucial - I'm absolutely delighted to reach another semi-final."

Hood's Dream Run Ends

The quarter-final appearance caps a fairytale tournament for Hood, who earned £100,000 - funds he plans to invest in opening a Chinese restaurant. Sky Sports analyst Glen Durrant praised both competitors: "The crowd witnessed something special today. Hood has shown he belongs at this level, but Anderson's mastery of big moments was exceptional."

Historic Achievement

Anderson's victory marks his 10th World Championship semi-final appearance overall (including two in the BDO). He now awaits the winner between Luke Humphries and Gian Van Veen, describing Humphries as "a top-class player who's been consistently brilliant."

The Scot remains on course for his first world title since 2016, with the semi-finals set for Friday evening at Ally Pally.
