England's national hockey teams faced a tough start to their FIH Pro League campaigns with both squads suffering defeats in Dublin on Wednesday.
Men's Team Overpowered by Germany
The men's side fell 4-1 to Olympic champions Germany despite a brief resurgence. After conceding an early goal, Nick Bandurak equalized for England, but Justus Weigand's subsequent strike put Germany back in control. The German team maintained their dominance throughout the match, extending their lead in the second half.
Women's Squad Battles Weather and Belgium
Meanwhile, the women's team struggled against both their opponents and challenging windy conditions. Belgium took command early through Stephanie Vanden Borre's opener. England remained competitive until the final quarter when a tactical goalkeeper substitution backfired, allowing Charlotte Englebert to seal Belgium's 3-0 victory with an empty-net finish.
Both English teams face quick turnarounds, with the men scheduled to play Belgium on Thursday while the women prepare for an encounter against Ireland.
"It's a disappointing start, but we'll analyze these performances and come back stronger," said an England Hockey spokesperson.
The Pro League continues this week with all matches being streamed live on the FIH's official platforms.
