The Los Angeles Clippers have officially severed ties with future Hall of Famer Chris Paul, as the team continues to flounder in the early stages of the NBA season. The decision comes amid a brutal stretch where the Clippers have dropped 14 of their last 16 games.

The franchise announced the 40-year-old point guard's departure ahead of their matchup against the Atlanta Hawks. Paul, currently in his 21st and final NBA season, is widely regarded as one of the greatest playmakers in league history.

"Chris will no longer be with the team, but this separation isn't about placing blame," Clippers basketball operations chief Lawrence Frank told ESPN. "He's a Clippers legend who made an indelible mark on this organization. The responsibility for our record falls on me."

Paul confirmed the news via Instagram, posting: "Just found out I'm being sent home." Reports from ESPN indicate tensions had been brewing between Paul and head coach Tyronn Lue, with the pair reportedly not speaking for weeks prior to the move.

The veteran guard originally played six seasons for the Clippers from 2011-2017 before returning on a one-year deal last July. Paul ranks second all-time in both assists (12,552) and steals (2,728), trailing only Utah Jazz icon John Stockton in both categories.

Despite his individual accolades, Paul's career lacks an NBA championship. His lone Finals appearance came in 2021 with the Phoenix Suns, who fell to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Clippers now face an uphill battle to salvage their season, while Paul's future in the league remains uncertain as he approaches retirement.
