In a strategic move to bolster election security, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba has appointed nine senior officers to lead newly established Electoral Policing Zones across Uganda. The announcement, made in a press release on Tuesday, aims to ensure a peaceful electoral process during the upcoming National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries and the 2026 general elections.
The IGP emphasized that the appointments are part of a comprehensive operational plan designed to proactively address election-related security threats and safeguard citizens nationwide. "These zonal commanders will coordinate security efforts to maintain law and order throughout the electoral process," the statement noted.
The newly appointed commanders include AIGP Kafero Moses Kabugo for the Busoga Zone, AIGP Tanui Stephen for the Northern Zone, CP Lawot Patrick for the Karamoja Zone, and CP Nkore Paul for the Kyoga Zone. Other appointees are CP Maate Godfrey Bolingo (Central Zone), CP Muluya Moses (Albertine Zone), CP Ecega Richard (Kampala Metropolitan Zone), CP Kulaigye Hillary (South Western Zone), and CP Namuwoza Dennis (Rwenzori Zone).
Each commander will oversee multiple regions, working closely with other security agencies to ensure a peaceful, lawful, and orderly election process. The appointments take immediate effect, addressing concerns over political violence in areas previously identified as hotspots.
ACP Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that the initiative is a proactive measure to prevent incidents of violence involving political actors and their supporters, which have marred previous elections.
