Tanzania’s Taifa Stars will embark on their most significant challenge yet in the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 when they meet Morocco in the quarterfinal match on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 PM local time.
Having topped their group with impressive performances, the Taifa Stars secured their spot in the knockout stages after winning three matches and drawing one. Morocco, however, had to navigate the "group of death," defeating DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia to reach the quarterfinal stage. The Atlas Lions are two-time champions of the tournament and pose a formidable threat to Tanzania.
Hemed "Morocco" Suleiman, a key player for the Tanzanian team, acknowledges the strength of the Moroccan side but emphasizes that respect, rather than fear, will drive his team’s performance. "We respect them, but we’re not afraid," Suleiman stated. "The Benjamin Mkapa Stadium will be packed because the Tanzanian people now believe in their team."
The Taifa Stars will rely heavily on their defensive duo, Dickson Job and Hamad Bacca, to neutralize Morocco’s top scorer, Lamlaoui, who has scored three goals alongside Fei Toto. Yusuphu Kagoma and Yahya Mudathir will be instrumental in midfield, while Clinton Mzize and Iddy Nado are expected to provide the offensive spark up front.
This match marks Tanzania's first-ever quarterfinal appearance in the competition, a significant milestone for a team that has steadily improved over the years. The Taifa Stars will draw inspiration from Kenya's surprising victory over Morocco in the group stages. Earlier in the day, Kenya will face Madagascar at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
With the home crowd's support, Tanzania aims to make history and advance further in the CHAN 2024 tournament. The stage is set for an exhilarating clash between the hosts and the experienced Moroccan side.
