Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) clinched their sixth trophy of the year by defeating Brazilian club Flamengo in a gripping Intercontinental Cup final, settled by a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov was the standout performer, saving four consecutive penalties to secure the win.
The match, held at the Ali Stadium in Qatar, saw PSG take an early lead in the 38th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia capitalized on a low cross from Desire Doue. However, Flamengo equalized in the 62nd minute when Jorginho converted a penalty after Giorgian de Arrascaeta was fouled by Marquinhos.
Despite a strong finish from PSG, which included the introduction of FIFA Best Player of the Year Ousmane Dembele, the score remained deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes and an additional 30 minutes of extra time. The game then proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Safonov's heroic saves became the decisive factor.
Safonov denied Flamengo players Saul Niguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira, and Luiz Araujo, allowing PSG to convert their penalties through Vitinha and Nuno Mendes, ultimately winning the shootout 5-4.
This victory marks another successful chapter for PSG, who have now won the Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Champions League, Trophee des Champions, and Uefa Super Cup in 2025. Coach Luis Enrique and several PSG players were also recognized in the FIFA Best awards, further cementing the team's dominance in European football.
PSG's next challenge will be in the Coupe de France, where they face Vendee Fontenay Foot on Saturday at 20:00 GMT.
