Iran has carried out a missile attack on the Al-Udeid US military base in Qatar, citing it as a response to US airstrikes on its nuclear sites. The base, well-known for being the largest US military installation in the Middle East, also hosts British military personnel on rotation.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the attack, emphasizing Iran's commitment to defending its sovereignty and portraying US bases in the region as vulnerabilities. Conflicting reports emerged regarding the number of missiles fired, with Iran claiming six, the US stating 14, and Qatar reporting 19, all allegedly intercepted. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.
Prior to the attack, both the US and UK had issued warnings to their citizens in Qatar to "shelter in place." President Donald Trump acknowledged Iran's advance notice of the attack, expressing gratitude for the lack of casualties and minimal damage. Despite labeling the attack as "very weak," he indicated an opportunity for peace.
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, emphasized that while Iran did not cause harm during the attack, the country would not tolerate any violations. Signs indicating an imminent attack included the closure of Qatar's airspace and the redirection of flights bound for Doha to other airports.
The attack followed US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, escalating tensions in the region amidst ongoing conflicts between Iran, Israel, and the US. Israel had initiated military actions against Iran, alleging the necessity to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The US intervention aimed to cripple Iran's nuclear program, an action disputed by Iran, which maintains its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes.
Hostilities between Iran and Israel continued beyond the US strikes, further fueling tensions in the region. The attack on the US base in Qatar marks a significant escalation in the conflict, prompting concerns about the potential repercussions on the Middle East stability.
