Newcastle United have successfully completed the transfer of AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw. The 24-year-old Germany international is set to arrive at St James' Park, joining manager Eddie Howe's squad for the upcoming Premier League season.

Described as a key addition by Howe, Thiaw arrives for a fee reported to be £34.6 million, subject to potential add-ons. His arrival represents the Magpies' third significant signing of the summer following the capture of winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and the loan move of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton.

Speaking about the move, Thiaw expressed his delight, stating: "I'm really excited to join this massive club. I can't wait to start training and to get to know my new team-mates and all the staff. The gaffer showed me his vision and what he wants to do with me as a player and the club itself, which is really exciting. I think Newcastle speaks for itself. It's a great club, a big club with passionate fans who I can't wait to see at St James' Park."

For Newcastle, strengthening the defensive options was a primary objective this summer, aiming to enhance squad depth and lower the average age following a period of relative stability. The window, however, proved challenging, with several high-profile targets such as Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, and James Trafford failing to materialise.

Howe highlighted Thiaw's attributes, praising his quality and experience: "We're really pleased to have Malick on board. He's a player I've admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options. Malick is still young but brings valuable experience of Champions League football, as well as playing in the Bundesliga and Serie A, which is a major positive for us as we return to Europe this season."

Before joining AC Milan in 2022, Thiaw earned three caps for the German national team. During his debut season at San Siro, he made 31 appearances across all competitions for the Serie A champions, netting once – notably scoring against Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage during November 2024.

Newcastle's Premier League campaign begins on Saturday with a trip to Aston Villa. Further transfer activity is expected in the coming days or weeks as the club completes its squad preparations.
