Gerrard in Advanced Talks for Rangers Return as Club Eyes Managerial Solution

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is engaged in advanced discussions with the club’s American ownership group regarding a potential return to the Ibrox hot seat. The 45-year-old, who led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade in 2021, met with key decision-makers in London on Thursday for constructive talks. However, Rangers are also exploring alternative candidates, with former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl featuring prominently on their shortlist.

Gerrard, who departed Rangers in November 2021 to manage Aston Villa before a stint with Saudi Arabia’s Al Ettifaq, has expressed his desire to resume his managerial career with a "challenge that suits his ambitions." Speaking on the *Rio Meets* podcast, Gerrard hinted at "unfinished business" in management, suggesting a return to Rangers could appeal to him given his prior success at the club.

The London talks involve Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh, vice-chairman Paraag Marathe, and 49ers Enterprises technical director Gretar Steinsson. The club is seeking stability after Russell Martin’s abrupt dismissal following just 123 days in charge, leaving Rangers eighth in the Scottish Premiership—11 points behind leaders Hearts and nine behind rivals Celtic.

Ex-Rangers striker Kris Boyd believes Gerrard’s presence could significantly elevate the club’s performance, stating: "Steven Gerrard is the right man for Rangers right now. He has unfinished business there—he brought a winning mentality and knows the pressures of the job."

Rangers next host Dundee United in the league on October 18, with further fixtures against Brann in the Europa League and Hibernian live on Sky Sports. The club is also set to face Celtic in the League Cup semi-finals on November 2.

As Gerrard and Rohl remain frontrunners, Rangers’ leadership will likely announce a decision soon to ensure managerial stability ahead of crucial upcoming matches.
