Chelsea Complete £26m Transfer for Renato Veiga
Late on Wednesday afternoon, Chelsea Football Club and Spanish giants Villarreal reached a formal agreement worth £26 million (~€30 million) for the permanent transfer of 22-year-old Portuguese defender Renato Veiga.
The Centre-Back, who joined Chelsea from Swiss side FC Basel in the summer of 2024, is preparing to move to Villarreal and sign a long-term contract at Estadi de la Ceramica. His time with the Premier League champions was limited to one season, during which he made 18 first-team appearances before being sent on loan to Juventus in January.
Veiga was not considered a first-choice option at Stamford Bridge this summer. Despite some loan interest, Chelsea opted instead for a permanent move, utilizing the potential transfer fee as part of their financial planning ahead of the September 1st deadline for summer signings.
This significant payment will provide Chelsea with increased funds to pursue further targets. The club continues to advance talks for highly sought-after Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons.
About Renato Veiga:
Born in Portugal, Veiga joined Chelsea in 2024 after a spell at FC Basel. During his solitary season in west London, he featured 18 times for the first team before spending the January window on loan at Juventus. His impending move to Villarreal marks the end of his Chelsea journey.
Chelsea's Future Targets:
The sale of Veiga is expected to bolster Chelsea's budget for potential additions before the transfer window closes. While a permanent deal for Garnacho or a move for Simons remains subject to negotiation, the Veiga sale provides crucial financial ammunition.
Furthermore, Chelsea is also seeking resolutions for other players whose futures at the club are uncertain. Talks are ongoing regarding potential moves for Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson.
